Borussia Dortmund secured a remarkable 3:2 away victory against TSG Hoffenheim on September 5, 2026. BVB came from 0:2 down at halftime to complete a stunning second-half turnaround.
Edin Terzic's team traveled to Sinsheim hampered by injuries. Dortmund still delivered an efficient performance. "Verletzungsmisere vollständig verdaut, jedenfalls ergebnistechnisch," commented Sueddeutsche Sport. This win moves Dortmund up to fifth place in the Bundesliga standings, with three points from one game and a +2 goal difference.
Hoffenheim took an early lead. Leon Avdullahu scored before halftime from a Vladimir Coufal assist. Shortly after, Tim Lemperle made it 2:0 for the hosts. Borussia Dortmund looked out of ideas. In the 61st minute, Serhou Guirassy started the comeback. The striker pulled one back to make it 1:2. Just five minutes later, Guirassy then set up the equalizer for Fábio Silva, who fired home for 2:2.
The decisive third goal for BVB came late, but into the wrong net. Albian Hajdari deflected a ball unfortunately past his own goalkeeper to seal the 2:3 defeat for his team. For Hoffenheim's Ethan Nwaneri, it was his Bundesliga debut. Filippo Mane had to leave the pitch injured after just 32 minutes.
Borussia Dortmund's injury crisis is significant. Captain Emre Can has been out since a cruciate ligament tear in March. Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck suffered an ankle injury during the World Cup. Left-back Ramy Bensebaini is struggling with a back bruise from the Supercup. Another major absentee is Giannis Konstantelias, who tore his cruciate ligament on the first matchday. The current list of sidelined players is available on our injuries page.
Despite these absences, the team managed to grab three important points. They showed character and fighting spirit. This victory provides confidence for the challenges ahead. Next up is a home match against SC Paderborn 07 on September 12. Paderborn currently sits in twelfth place. All of BVB's upcoming fixtures can be found in our fixtures schedule.
Alongside Dortmund's win, there were other spectacular results. Werder Bremen defeated RB Leipzig 3:1. Niclas Füllkrug put Bremen ahead after an hour, with Marco Grüll sealing the deal in the 80th minute. Ridle Baku only managed a consolation goal for Leipzig in stoppage time.
Bayer Leverkusen celebrated a clear 4:0 home win against Union Berlin. Miguel assisted Ezequiel Fernandez's goal after just 43 seconds. Facundo Medina scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 30th minute. Patrik Schick (48th) and Ibrahim Maza with a deflected long-range shot completed the rout.
Perhaps the craziest match was between Borussia Mönchengladbach and SV Elversberg. Gladbach led 3:1 after goals from Hugo Bolin (11th, 44th) and Joe Scally (56th), but ended up losing 3:4. Maurice Krattenmacher (66th, 90+) and Felix Keidel (80th) turned the game around for Elversberg. David Mokwa had scored for 1:2. In front of 51,042 spectators, Gladbach thus remained pointless after their 0:3 loss to Leipzig. Manager Eugen Polanski is under pressure.
Borussia Dortmund can be satisfied with their winning start to the season. The next challenge awaits on September 12 at the Signal Iduna Park against SC Paderborn 07.
