Borussia Dortmund have made a perfect start to the season, sitting second in the Bundesliga with nine points from three games. This trio of opening victories marks the first time in eleven years the club has taken maximum points from its first three matches, powered significantly by the burgeoning strike partnership of Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva.
Strike Partnership in Form
Serhou Guirassy has already netted four goals and provided two assists in five competitive appearances. Both of those assists were for his attacking partner Fabio Silva, who has himself scored two Bundesliga goals. In doing so, the Portuguese forward has matched his entire league goal tally from the previous season, which took him 28 matches to achieve. "We have a very good relationship," Guirassy said of their link-up. "Sometimes when I haven't been playing, I've given him advice, and when he isn't playing, he gives me advice." This productive combination was key in the 3-2 comeback win at Hoffenheim, where Silva scored the equaliser, and the 3-0 home victory over Paderborn, where he opened the scoring.
Competition Drives Performance
Head coach Niko Kovač sees the internal competition for attacking spots as a key driver behind the strong performances. "Competition keeps things lively," the Dortmund manager stated. "The competition is there this season, too." With eight goals scored and only two conceded, the team is currently showing an efficient attack and a stable defence.
Historic Duel with Stuttgart
This in-form attack faces a stern test on Saturday at the MHP Arena against VfB Stuttgart. This Bundesliga fixture is the highest-scoring in league history, with 381 goals from 112 meetings. For Stuttgart, Deniz Undav, who finished as Germany's top scorer at the World Cup with three goals, remains a constant threat, having scored a hat-trick against BVB in November. This season, however, he is yet to open his account. Instead, new signing Dženan Pejčinović has turned heads with a DFB Cup hat-trick and even attracted interest from national team coach Jürgen Klopp. For Dortmund, the aim is to extend their flawless run of five consecutive wins in all competitions and defend their position near the top. The team will have to do so without the injured Filippo Mané, Giannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas. The last meeting in April ended in a 2-0 win for Dortmund.
