Borussia Dortmund kicked off the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with a 2-0 home victory over Hamburger SV. The match took place on Saturday, 29 August 2026, at a packed Signal Iduna Park and was documented by Reuters Connect with a licensed photo.
The team put in a convincing performance, scoring both goals in the first half. Giannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas celebrated the second goal for the Black and Yellows together. This moment was captured by photographer Hesham Elsherif for NurPhoto. With this win, Dortmund sits in fifth place in the table after the first matchday with three points. They have scored two goals and conceded none, giving them a goal difference of +2.
The victory was overshadowed by personnel shortages. The team is currently missing four key players. In addition to the two goalscorers from the match, Giannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas, Justin Lerma and Ramy Bensebaini are also unavailable. This information is currently accessible on our injuries list.
The absence of Konstantelias and Karetsas, who were celebrating during the HSV match, highlights the volatile situation. Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck is also sidelined. These absences present the coach with tactical challenges, especially in defence and midfield.
The three-point start is an important signal. Borussia Dortmund is in fifth place with three points, just behind the top teams. The record from one game: one win, no draws, no losses. The current form curve shows a "W" for win.
The direct comparison with competitors will become clearer in the coming weeks. The team has given itself a good starting position with the clear win and a clean sheet. Fans can follow the table development on our standings page.
The next challenge awaits on Saturday, 5 September 2026. Borussia Dortmund will then travel to face TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim started with one point and sits in twelfth place.
This away match will be an early test, especially given the personnel issues. Preparation for this fixture is compressed due to the short turnaround time. The entire season schedule can be found on our fixtures overview.
In addition to the injured players, the coach relied on a proven basic formation. The lineup showed a mix of experience and young talent. The defence remained focused for the full match minutes and gave HSV few chances.
The depleted back line must prove again in Hoffenheim that it can remain solid under difficult conditions. The complete squad composition and detailed statistics for all players are available on our squad page. The next competitive match is on 5 September 2026 in Sinsheim.
