Mathis Albert has broken two age records for American players following his Bundesliga debut and a goal for the United States men's national team. The 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker is now the youngest American to feature in Germany's top flight and the youngest ever to score for the USMNT.
Albert made his Bundesliga bow on Matchday 31 of last season, coming on in the 88th minute of a 4-0 win over SC Freiburg. At 16 years, 11 months and five days, he surpassed the mark set by Giovanni Reyna, who debuted for Dortmund in January 2020. Just months later, in September 2026, Albert made history again. He scored in stoppage time in a friendly against Chile in St. Louis, securing a 4-2 win for the USA and becoming, at 17 years and four months, the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history, breaking a record previously held by Christian Pulisic.
From California to BVB's youth ranks
The winger's path took him from the LA Galaxy academy to Dortmund. He featured in a friendly for Galaxy's second team against Nordsjaelland at just 14. His father's job relocation to Germany facilitated the move in 2024. At Borussia Dortmund, Albert progressed rapidly through the youth sides. He scored three goals and provided two assists in six games for the U17s, earning promotion to the U19s. There, he netted seven times in 23 outings in 2024/25 and has improved to nine goals in 17 appearances so far in the 2025/26 season. He also impressed on the international youth stage, scoring for the USA against the Czech Republic at the U17 World Cup.
His potential was noted early by coaches. Sam Al-Basith, an academy coach at LA Galaxy, described him: "He was unpredictable. He played with freedom. He was creative. He played with instinct and had so much intention behind his actions." These traits have been evident at Dortmund, where Albert compensates for a slight frame with confidence and a willingness to take on defenders one-on-one.
A record-holder in fine company
Albert is the latest academy graduate to break into the first team following Luca Reggiani and Samuele Inácio. He follows in the footsteps of a notable line of American talent at the club. Christian Pulisic, who made 127 appearances for Dortmund, was the previous holder of the youngest US goalscorer record. His €64 million move to Chelsea in the winter of 2019 highlighted the potential Dortmund sees in young players. Albert now has the opportunity to continue that legacy.
His breakthrough coincides with a strong period for Borussia Dortmund. Edin Terzić's side tops the Bundesliga with 12 points from four games, holding a two-point lead over Bayern Munich. The current run of five consecutive wins, most recently a 1-0 victory at VfB Stuttgart, provides a stable environment for nurturing talents like Albert.
After already playing the full match in the DFB-Pokal against HEBC, Albert's Bundesliga minutes against Freiburg and his senior international debut against Peru in September 2026 marked the next logical step. US coach Gregg Berhalter has shown faith in him, and at Dortmund, he remained in the extended squad after further bench appearances against Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim in April 2026. His next potential appearance for Borussia is the home match on October 9th against Werder Bremen, who currently sit eighth.
