Mathis Albert has become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the United States men's national team. The 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund prospect netted the fourth goal in a 4-2 win over Chile in St. Louis on Tuesday, breaking a record previously held by Christian Pulisic.
The forward was introduced as a substitute in the 71st minute and made an instant impact. An explosive burst down the left flank drew a foul near the edge of the box, leading to a penalty that Malik Tillman converted to restore the lead. Albert then capped his cameo in stoppage time, scoring from close range after a free kick hit the crossbar and bounced over the line.
Pochettino's praise for instant impact
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino was impressed by the newcomer's immediate influence. "His first action on the pitch? Boom, aggressive. Control the ball and immediately go forward," Pochettino said. It was the teenager's second strong impact from the bench in days, following his debut against Peru on Saturday. The coach emphasized that Albert brought exactly the energy and fearlessness the team needed in that moment.
Rapid rise in BVB colours
The historic strike is the latest milestone in a rapid ascent. Albert, who in April became the youngest American to ever appear in the Bundesliga, has quickly established himself in Dortmund's youth setup. For the second team, he has four goals and four assists in 18 appearances. With the U19s, he registered 14 goals and nine assists in 30 matches. He scored his first senior goal for BVB in the DFB-Pokal, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5-0 win over HEBC Hamburg.
His development coincides with a successful period for Borussia Dortmund. Under manager Niko Kovač, the team tops the Bundesliga with 12 points from four games, holding a two-point lead over Bayern Munich. Current form reads five consecutive wins, including a 1-0 victory at VfB Stuttgart, providing momentum for the next fixture. The league leaders host eighth-placed Werder Bremen at the Westfalenstadion on 9 October. Dortmund won the last meeting 3-0 in January.
Before that, Albert is expected to feature again for the United States. The winger is in the squad for friendlies against Mexico on 3 October and Canada on 6 October. US sporting director Kasey Keller also expressed excitement about Albert's progress, viewing him as a central building block for the national team's future.
