Borussia Dortmund's Sabitzer may leave the club before the transfer deadline. The Austrian was recently present only briefly at the joint dinner of the professionals and their families. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Sabitzer left the so-called "Familientag" at Jägerheim on Niederhofer Kohlenweg immediately after the last Dortmund players, including Ramy Bensebaini and Fabio Silva, arrived. The Ruhr Nachrichten did not mention the exact reasons, but the action leaves plenty of room for speculation.

What's happening?

Sabitzer could leave the club before the transfer deadline on September 1st. In the previous season, the 32-year-old had largely lost his starting position under Niko Kovac, and with the upcoming signing of Joey Veerman, his situation could worsen again. The 27-year-old Dutch midfielder is reportedly on the verge of signing a contract with BVB. Dortmund is taking advantage of an exit clause in Veerman's contract at PSV Eindhoven and signing the 27-year-old for a fixed transfer fee of between 22 and 25 million euros.

Why it matters for Borussia Dortmund

The contract of the 32-year-old in Dortmund runs until 2027, and for the Black and Yellows, the current transfer window would be the last chance to generate a transfer fee. In the previous season, Sabitzer played 34 times in all competitions. He scored one goal and provided four assists.

What comes next?

Borussia Dortmund is currently second in the Bundesliga, 16 points behind the leaders Bayern Munich. The Black and Yellows will face SC Paderborn 07 at home in the next week (September 12, 2026). In the current season, the Dortmunders have already scored 70 goals and conceded 34 (+36 goal difference).
